Bella Abzug was a congresswoman, lawyer and activist in the feminist movement, frequently nicknamed “Battling Bella” during her political career1Women Politicians and the Media – Maria Braden.

Abzug was one of the first Congress members to support gay rights and introduced the Equality Act of 1974, which was the first federal gay rights bill.

In 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed Abzug to head a new National Commission on the Observance of International Women’s Year. She would continue this work as a chairperson for the National Advisory Committee for Women.
