Magnus Hirschfeld was a German sexologist and physician known for his advocacy for sexual minorities.

In 1897, he founded the Scientific Humanitarian Committee, a group aiming to defend the rights of sexual minorities and repeal a section of the German penal code that criminalized homosexuality.

In 1910, he coined the term “transvestite” in his book The Transvestites: The Erotic Drive to Cross-Dress.

In 1919, he founded the Institute for Sexual Research (Institut für Sexualwissenschaft) to explore the science of sexuality1Institute of Sexology. All of its documents were burned in 1935 by Nazis.

In 1930, he began a world tour, visiting several countries to escape homophobic turmoil in Germany.
