Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. was born in 1951 in Mount Kisco, New York, and graduated from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.
His great grandfather was Adolph Ochs, an owner of The New York Times. Sulzberger first joined The New York Times in 1978 as a correspondent in Washington, D.C. Later in 1981, he moved to New York as a metro reporter and was appointed assistant metro editor later the same year. Between 1983 and 1987, Sulzberger worked in a variety of New York Times departments, including production and corporate planning.
In 1987, Sulzberger finally became an assistant publisher. And then, a year later, a deputy publisher.
