American politician who served in the House of Representatives from 1923 to 1973.

Ushered the major civil rights legislation of the mid-20th century through the House of Representatives.

Fun Fact:

In 1965, Celler proposed and steered to passage the Hart-Celler Act, also known as the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which eliminated national origins as a consideration for immigration. He was also the principal author of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
