Leviev has a good relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, dating back to the 1990s. He has done notable philanthropic work for Chabad Hasidic Jewish causes in Europe and Israel. His investments in diamond mining in Angola and in Israeli settlements have been the subject of protest.
