Before becoming a Senator, Javits fought in World War 2 and served in the House of Representatives. In 1954, he defeated Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jr. to become the Attorney General of New York. As Senator, Javits played a significant role in the passage of the 1964 civil rights act.
