Rodin served at Yale University from 1972 to 1994, after which she was appointed president of the University of Pennsylvania, her alma mater. This made her the first female president of an Ivy League institution, and the first graduate of the University to take on its highest leadership role.

Gutmann was named by Fortune magazine in 2018 as one of the “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders”. While serving at Princeton, she founded Princeton’s ethics center, the University Center for Human Values. In 2021, she was nominated by President Biden to serve as the US Ambassador to Germany.
